At the beginning of the 20th century the increasing demand of health care and hygiene of food led to the creation of municipal abattoir houses to prevent infections and supervise animal slaughter.

Pou d'Amunt was considered as ideal location as it´s situated outside the centre and directly at the main road to the town. In 1929 it was inaugurated as municipal abattoir.

The stand-alone building consists of three halls, two ground level side wings and a one-storey middle part. It was built up on Marés sandstones, has a wooden beam ceiling and arab roof tiles. The front facade holds the town´s coat of arms. The sculpture "Noves Amistats" (2005) by Sarasate is set in front of the building.

In 2009 the Municipal Library, the Minicipal Archive of Porreres and the University Centre were installed in the building. Subsequently offices for police use were included.
