A building between town houses, three floors high and renovated in the 19th century, with further work following in the 20th and 21st centuries. The L’Hospital building was donated by the reverend Agustí Font to the Town Hall and the Porreres parish, for use as a hospital and to be managed by the sisters of Charity.

The museum was an enterprise led by Joan Mesquida and Anna Ferrando who in 1982 donated 36 art pieces. The centre was inaugurated on the 14th August 1986 inside the town hall, later to be moved to the former hospital building on 10th August 2002.

The collection constitutes one of the most complete collections of contemporary art by prestigious artists both national and foreign, with names including Cándido Ballester, Dionís Bennàssar, Jim Bird, Remigia Caubet, Coll Bardolet, Dalí, Macedowski, Pilar Montaner de Sureda, Pere Pujol, Riera Ferrari i Tarrassó, amongst others.
